Meet Steve Spurgin, AMCAW Volunteer

Dec 22, 2025 | Meet Our Volunteers, Behind the scenes, News

Did you know that AMCAW is managed and run by a large team of volunteers? All metal clay artists, they share their professional skills and energy to help AMCAW create and bring you more programs, tutorials, and fun. We thought you’d enjoy meeting some of these fabulous volunteers – and perhaps become a volunteer yourself!

Metal Clay Journey

Although Steve doesn’t work with metal clay, he’s become very familiar with it due to helping his wife, Tracey, with her jewellery making and teaching business, Craftworx Jewellery Workshops. Ever since Tracey started using metal clay, Steve has helped her with the admin and finance side of her business as well as taking on some of the advertising and marketing including website design, graphic design and flyers.

Over the years, Steve has become more and more involved with the Craftworx business and has learnt a lot about metal clay. He sources raw materials and equipment for the business and helps with the design of the Flexi-templates that Tracey uses in her tutorials and workshops as well as selling on her website. He has taught himself how to use computer software to design files compatible with die cutting machines and laser printers.

AMCAW Involvement

Steve’s initial involvement with AMCAW started around September 2022, when he was asked to help Julia Rai with the SINTER 24 sponsorship and vendor opportunities. He’s enjoyed attending many metal clay conferences both in UK and USA over the years, but SINTER 24 was the first time he had taken on an organising role. He enjoyed being the SINTER Marketplace Manager so much and was asked to do the same thing again for SINTER 26.

Steve really enjoys the camaraderie among AMCAW members. Everybody is kind and helpful, and nothing is too much trouble.

He was appointed to the AMCAW Board in January 2024 and has been Vice President since the beginning of 2025.

About Steve

Steve was born in Liverpool and went to the same school as two of the Beatles (not at the same time, before you ask). He met Tracey through church bellringing (campanology) when they were still teenagers. Steve focused on business studies and marketing in his formal education. This foundation led him professionally toward the business world, where he primarily worked in the medical industry. Steve’s business admin background is what has allowed him to help Tracey run her Craftworx business.

On a personal note, Steve plays piano and all manner of electronic keyboards and instruments. Back in the day, he was in a band who had a recording contract with a record label called RAK Records (now part of EMI). Sadly, the band never quite made the ‘big time’, but they recorded in some very famous studios including Abbey Road and met some very famous people – great memories.

Steve is also heavily involved with his local Rugby Union Football Club in Beverley, East Yorkshire and is a committee member and heads up their digital media activities.
